If you're wondering what the difference is between FlatOut Head On and FlatOut Ultimate Carnage -- the slightly updated next-gen version of FlatOut 2 -- then we can simplify things for you: not much...What makes FlatOut a particularly unique beast is that it combines simulation-style physics with arcade gameplay. In races, boost is earned by smashing into opponents and creating debris by colliding with trackside (and sometimes track bound) obstacles, but even so, races are won and lost not through aggression, but skilful handling. In the career mode there are three tiers of vehicle, and upgrading your cars and parts is essential to make steady progress. There are plenty of tournaments that need winning, with lots of cash bonuses to be obtained even if you don't, so you seldom feel like you aren't making progress...There are lots of racing games out there, but nothing that really compares to FlatOut; nor has there been since Destruction Derby all those years ago. Yes, technically it's a port of FlatOut 2, and a pretty belated one at that, but just because it's the least visually impressive version of the game doesn't make it the least technically accomplished. Obviously if you enjoyed the game in one of its other incarnations then you'll enjoy this... - Colin J. Barnwell
